Nowadays, roads play important roles in civilian lives especially for transportation and cargo applications. Having up to date maps of roads, seems critical for every further planning and decision making. For these purposes, recently, automatic road extraction and maps generation from high and very high resolution images has become interesting topics in recent investigation of photogrammetry and remote sensing. On the other hand, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) showed appealing proceed in generation of very high resolution imagery interesting for map generation applications because of lower expenses, higher availability and ease of application. In this paper, we try to review all the available methods presented by now for automatic road map generation based on very high resolution images achieved from UAVs. More than 20 papers are reviewed and based on critical parameter, they are analyzed and most applicable and appropriate methods are introduced.
